Zones
A wide zone covering the area they are allowed to drive in — town, or a radius covering the school-to-home-to-work triangle. Optionally an inverted setup with small zones around places you want to know about.
Schedule
Often restricted to specific windows. A common pattern is active 22:00–06:00, when a newly-licensed driver being far from home is worth knowing about, and inactive during the day.
Devices
A hardwired or OBD-port GPS tracker in the vehicle. A phone tracks the person, not the car, which is a different question.

Push and email. Many parents route these to both parents so it is not one person's job to notice.

Vehicle tracking for a teenage driver is a genuinely contested idea, and it is worth separating the two things people mean by it.

One is surveillance: a live map showing every journey, every stop, every speed. The other is a boundary agreed in advance, which stays silent unless it is crossed. The first tends to damage trust for information nobody uses. The second is closer to how a curfew works — a rule you both know about, that only produces information when it is broken.

The usual setup

Rather than a small zone around home, most people want a large zone covering the area a new driver is allowed to drive in — the town, or a region spanning home, school, and work. The alert fires when the car goes somewhere outside that understanding.

Draw it with the geofence builder following real boundaries — a ring road, a river, the edge of town. Zones this large are forgiving of GPS accuracy problems, so precision is not a concern here the way it is for a garden.

Time windows do most of the work

The schedule is what keeps this proportionate.

A common pattern is a zone active only between 22:00 and 06:00. During the day the car can go anywhere without generating anything. Late at night, a car well outside the agreed area is worth a message.

Another is weekday daytime only, for a driver who is supposed to be at school or work. Geoblip sets the window per device and per zone, so you can run both at once with different boundaries.

The point of the schedule is not to catch more. It is to catch less — so that the alerts which do arrive are worth reading.

Tracking the car, not the person

A phone tracks whoever carries it. A vehicle tracker tracks the vehicle. For this scenario the second is usually what you want, and it is also the less invasive option: it says nothing about where your child is when they are not driving.

OBD-port trackers plug into the diagnostic port under the dashboard, need no wiring, and draw power from the car. They are also removable in two seconds, which may or may not matter to you.

Hardwired trackers are fitted permanently and cannot be casually unplugged. More effort to install, and worth being open about rather than hiding.

Battery trackers need charging and get forgotten. Rarely the right choice for a vehicle that has power available.

Journey history

Alerts tell you about boundary crossings. Position history answers the other questions — how long the car sat at a location, what time it got home.

Say you are doing it

The practical argument, separate from the ethical one: covert tracking usually gets discovered, and discovery costs more trust than the tracking ever bought you.

An agreed boundary works differently. “You can drive anywhere in town; if the car leaves the area after 10pm I get a message” is a rule, not surveillance, and it can be negotiated. Some families set it to expire after six months. Some tie it to insurance costs. Those conversations go considerably better than the one that starts with a tracker being found under a seat.
