Zones
One polygon traced around the school grounds, including the playground and any car park where pickup happens. Add a second zone for after-school clubs if they are at a different site.
Schedule
Active 08:30–16:30, Monday to Friday only. Outside that window positions are still recorded but no alert fires, so the walk home never triggers anything.

The question most parents actually have is not “where is my child right now”. It is “is everything normal”. Those need very different tools.

Live tracking answers the first, and it demands that you keep looking. A geofence answers the second, and demands nothing from you until something changes. For school hours, the second is almost always what people want.

What this looks like in practice

You trace a boundary around the school grounds once. You set it active from 08:30 to 16:30 on weekdays. Then you forget about it.

If your child is inside the grounds during those hours, nothing happens — no notification, no reason to check. If they leave during lesson time, you get an alert within minutes. When they return, you get a second one telling you it resolved.

At 16:30 the window closes and the zone stops mattering, so the walk home, the detour to a friend’s house, and the weekend do not generate anything.

Why the time window matters more than the boundary

A geofence without a schedule sends alerts every single day at home time. Within a week those alerts are noise, and noise is dangerous — you stop reading them, and the one that matters arrives looking exactly like the ninety that did not.

Restricting the zone to lesson hours means every alert it ever sends is genuinely unexpected. That is the whole design goal.

Drawing a zone that will not cry wolf

The most common setup mistake is tracing the school building. Draw the grounds, and add margin:

Repeat alerts are suppressed

A phone sitting near the edge of the grounds will drift across the boundary as its reported position wanders. Geoblip sends one exit alert and then stays quiet until the child genuinely returns — a second alert requires a real re-entry first, not a few metres of GPS drift. The mechanism is described under alert debouncing.

A note on trust

Continuous location sharing between a parent and an older child is a relationship question, not a technical one, and plenty of families are uncomfortable with it for good reasons.

Geofencing is a middle path worth considering. It does not report where someone is — it reports only that a specific boundary was crossed during a specific window. On an ordinary day it produces no data about their movements at all, because nothing happened. That is a meaningfully smaller ask than a map showing their position every minute, and it is worth saying out loud when you set it up rather than installing it quietly.
